Dog dies after Virginia woman locks it in car outside a PetSmart

A 19-year-old Virginia woman was charged for locking her dog inside a hot car — where it died — while she shopped at PetSmart Monday.

Fairfax County police found the dog, a 5-year-old Puggle, locked in Megan Campbell’s car outside the pet store in Falls Church, suffering from intense heat. The poor pup succumbed to outdoor temperatures that reached the high 90s Monday afternoon.

Firefighters took the Puggle to Banfield Pet Hospital inside PetSmart, where it was pronounced dead.

“It’s a very sad, sad story,” said PetSmart manager Rich Ferry.
